What If Germany Sent Heavy Raiders to Guadalcanal? | Honolulu vs Lützow, Northampton vs Hipper |WotS
🔔 RING THE BELL!!!! Subscribe for weekly battle briefings, poll battles, and full grudge match recordings. What if the raiding force intercepted off Guadalcanal had been German instead of Japanese, and the action was fought in broad daylight? The historical Battle of Tassafaronga (30 November 1942) pitted American cruisers against Japanese destroyers at night off Guadalcanal. This companion piece throws that premise out entirely, and use German forces to try and resupply the Japanese. Why? Because GR do the fun, go watch Drachinifel for the History • Guadalcanal Campaign - The Battle of Tassa... whilst we entertain you with a What if? There is no historical basis for this matchup — the Kriegsmarine never operated in the Pacific. It exists purely because it is a fun pairing: the Kriegsmarine's heaviest raiders, the pocket battleship Lützow and the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper, against a scratch American group of cruisers and torpedo-armed destroyers standing in for the historical Guadalcanal defenders. This is a pure "what if": the Kriegsmarine's heaviest raiders, Admiral Hipper and the pocket battleship Lützow, meet the historical defenders of Guadalcanal in broad daylight instead of a Japanese destroyer squadron at night. There's no historical basis for this matchup — we just like mixing things up, and a black-screen night action doesn't make for exciting viewing. Standing in for the historical American force: USS Morris (Sims-class, standing in for Maury), USS Fletcher, USS Augusta (playing Northampton, the class namesake), USS Brooklyn (standing in for her sister ship Honolulu), and USS Vincennes. Against them: a scaled-down German raiding line of destroyers Z5 Paul Jacobi and Z4 Richard Beitzen screening Admiral Hipper and Lützow.
