Canadian Iroquois Destroyer vs Soviet Alfa Submarine | Sea Power

Today we continue our Cold War Surface Ships vs Submarines mini-series in Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age! In this episode, the Canadian Iroquois-class destroyer (DDG), equipped in her Cold War configuration, faces one of the Soviet Union's most advanced submarines—the Project 705 Alfa-class (Lira) nuclear attack submarine (SSN). Armed with CH-124 Sea King ASW helicopters, Mk 46 anti-submarine torpedoes, and the LIMBO anti-submarine mortar, the Iroquois must detect and destroy its elusive opponent before it can strike. The Alfa-class counters with its incredible 40+ knot underwater speed, extreme diving depth, and high-performance nuclear propulsion, making it one of the most formidable submarines of the 1970s. Can the Canadian destroyer successfully prosecute the contact, or will the Soviet Alfa use its speed and depth to survive—and win?
