De Moines has a real 9,000-metre immunity zone where both her belt and deck are safe. Her Mk 54 radar fire control fires accurately in any conditions. At 15,000–24,000 metres, this looks like De Moines' fight to win. The problem is 30.5 knots. Kongo is the fastest major Japanese warship afloat — 2.5 knots behind De Moines, not 8 or 9.
