광주 Then and Now ep02 광주역 경양방죽
Gwangju's Yesterday and Today By juxtaposing the images of Gwangju captured in photographs from long ago with its current appearance, we record our present brought about by the changes of the times. Gwangju Station and Gyeongyangbangjuk In 1922, Gwangju Station was located at the site of the current Dongbu Fire Station in Daein-dong. As the year of its establishment suggests, it holds the painful history of colonial exploitation by Imperial Japan. In 1969, due to the opening of the Gyeongjeon Line in the downtown section of Gwangju and urban development, it was relocated to its current location in Jungheung-dong. In May 1980, it was the site of the first fatality caused by gunfire from martial law troops, and it subsequently served as a campaign plaza for major politicians. Entering the 2000s, the railway tracks in the downtown section were relocated, and along with the closure of Namgwangju Station, it was changed to a KTX terminus; consequently, the practical role of Gwangju Station was diminished. Gyeongyangbangjuk was an artificial lake (bangjuk) created by Kim Bang, the Magistrate of Gwangju during the reign of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty, for agricultural and flood control purposes. Traces of it remain in the area of the current Homeplus in Gyerim-dong. During the Japanese colonial period, landfilling began under the pretext of creating residential areas for the Japanese, and it was completely filled in and disappeared in 1967 due to water quality deterioration and urban development. Taebongsan Mountain, which was located in present-day Jungheung-dong, vanished into history along with the relocation of Gwangju Station, the railway tracks, and the filling of Gyeongyangbangjuk.
