YouTube Pilot's Deadly Mistake Was Worse Than We Thought!

Hey, it's Hoover! I've got a weekly letter for you on the patterns that keep killing pilots. Free → https://pilotdebrief.com/pattern On a December afternoon in 2023, a Beechcraft Debonair cruising at 6,400 feet over middle Tennessee began oscillating in altitude and airspeed — minutes later, it was descending at nearly 12,000 feet per minute. The flight departed Knoxville Downtown Island Airport bound for Saline County Regional in Arkansas, a routine Part 91 personal cross-country with ATC flight following. The private pilot and her passenger leveled at 6,400 feet MSL and settled into cruise. Nothing about the early portion of the flight looked unusual on the radar tape. Then the ADS-B track tells a different story. The Debonair began oscillating between roughly 5,300 and 6,400 feet, with groundspeed swinging in step. The pilot missed two controller handoff instructions in succession — a quiet but serious indicator that something inside the cockpit had already gone wrong. What followed was a loss-of-control-in-flight sequence that ended in an unrecoverable dive. Groundspeed reached 228 knots and the descent rate hit an estimated 11,900 feet per minute before the airplane broke up over hilly, wooded terrain near Pulaski, Tennessee. The pilot's final transmission was an emergency declaration. The NTSB factual record gives us a lot to work with: the Century 2000 autopilot installation, an elevator trim found at roughly 5° nose down, and physical evidence of an in-flight breakup. In this debrief, we walk the ADS-B track minute by minute, look at how trim runaway and autopilot behavior can pin a pilot into a dive that exceeds the airframe's structural limits, and unpack what a cruise-altitude upset actually demands of the pilot in the seconds available. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ JOIN THE DEBRIEF CREW ON PATREON Ad-free videos and exclusive analysis From $5/month:   / pilotdebrief   ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SOURCES NTSB Accident ID: ERA24FA058 Status: Final Final Report: https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-repgen/ap... Every video on this channel analyzes publicly released NTSB final reports, factual narratives, CVR/FDR transcripts, and docket evidence to extract practical safety lessons for general aviation pilots. We do not speculate beyond the evidence. We do not blame pilots for being human. We debrief the decisions and the systems, not the people. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Sponsorships and brand partnerships: [email protected] #PilotDebrief #NTSB #LOCI #AviationSafety #GeneralAviation
