We will take a drive along the "2nd Irohazaka Slope" on Route 120, the uphill-only route of Nikko’s most iconic and scenic winding mountain pass in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. Starting after a brief break at the "Umagaeshi Parking Area," we begin our journey from the fork where the 1st and 2nd Irohazaka slopes divide. Watch as we navigate up the steep, one-way incline, highlighting each of the 20 continuous hairpin turns named after the Japanese alphabet characters from "I" (い) to "Ne" (ね). In this video, we will explore the history and full text of the "Iroha-uta" (a traditional Japanese poem that gave the slope its name). We will also look into the history of the now-abandoned Nikko Tozan Railway (cable car) that once connected Umagaeshi and Akechidaira, as well as the latest update on the Akechidaira Ropeway, which is currently closed for renewal (as of our filming in April 2026). Furthermore, for history enthusiasts, we will share a fascinating historical mystery regarding the Buddhist monk Tenkai, who is said to have named the scenic "Akechidaira" viewpoint—legend has it that he was actually the famous samurai commander Akechi Mitsuhide in hiding.
