We will take a drive along the Nikko Cedar Avenue (Nikko Sugi Namiki Kaido) in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, which is recognized by Guinness World Records as the "longest tree-lined avenue in the world." In this video, we head north on Route 121, turn onto the old Nikko Kaido (Route 119) at the "Moritomo" intersection, and enjoy a refreshing 17-minute drive all the way to the front of Tobu-Nikko Station. This historic avenue was planted over a period of more than 20 years by Masatsuna Matsudaira, a vassal of the Tokugawa clan, and his son Masanobu, who then donated it as an approach to Nikko Toshogu Shrine. It is a precious historical heritage site and the only one in Japan to receive a double designation as both a "Special Historic Site" and a "Special Natural Monument." From the car window, you will see a succession of spots rich in historical romance. These include the rare "Sakura-Sugi" (a wild cherry tree growing on an ancient cedar), the "Namiki Hotel" (a hollow cedar at the Shichihon-zakura Ichirizuka milestone) named because four adults could shelter from the rain inside it, and the "Bullet-Scarred Cedar" (Hodan-uchikomi Sugi) that tells the story of a fierce battle during the Boshin War.
