Tokyo Ikebukuro to Ikoinari-do Shrine, Beyond the Theater Streets | Japan Walking Tour 4K

Leaving Ikebukuro Station, I was pulled toward the east exit by the crowd and the colors of the signs. Meiji-dori, rows of drinking places, anime-covered amusement halls, and a green theater passed before I could place them on the map. With no sense of the district, I felt as though the city had arranged itself as one shifting stage. Farther in, temple names began to overlap with the outlines of city buildings. Closed gates and urban-shaped halls received the flow of people without standing apart from it. If you had been beside me, you would have watched the front of Ikebukuro gradually give way to the structures behind it. At the end of the theater streets, Ikoinari-do revealed the city without polish: its crowded grounds, the objects left in place, and the shrine’s wing-like form showed how daily life and faith had long occupied the same ground. I wanted you to see this place because it made no attempt to behave like a polished landmark. The sacred and the ordinary met here without disguising their awkward closeness. A wary cat watched the grounds before any visitor could. By then, the map no longer mattered. What remained was not an orderly destination, but a place where prayer kept its position inside the mixed-up city.
