The moment I set foot in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, my journey begins abruptly. There's no plan, no map. All I have is the smell of the cool late autumn breeze and a desire to understand the city's contours. Stepping into an alleyway, I encounter the breath of life unseen in tourist guides. Standing before the Benzaiten Stone Shrine, transformed by the construction of the Meiji-era railway, I can feel the passage of time etched into the decaying stone surface through my fingertips. While the Shonan Monorail tracks sway overhead, echoing with the inorganic pulse of modernity, I step into Kanagawa Prefectural Gokoku Shrine, where traces of handcrafted craftsmanship remain. There, I sense the raw passion of those who tried to build a place of prayer with their own hands. I pass through a tunnel that feels like another world, a cold wind blowing through, and stand before the Tamanawa Kubizuka, a memorial to the 1526 battle. In this beautifully preserved place, the silent voices of those who lived through a time of war echo. At the end of the walk, Gyokusenji Temple appears, where stone Buddha statues from an abandoned cemetery that have been watching over this land since the Oei era in the 1400s and the Greedy Jizo statue that accepts people's wishes stand solemnly as a place of faith that continues to this day.
