Recovery Coaching in the ED: Considerations and Perspectives from Early Adopters
This Peer Recovery Support Services Community of Practice session focuses on recovery coaching in emergency department settings and lessons learned from early adopters in New Hampshire. The session explores how recovery coaches can support people who present to emergency departments with substance use-related needs, including opioid overdose, substance use disorder, and related behavioral health concerns. Presenters discuss how recovery coaches can serve as a bridge between the hospital, the individual, family members, recovery community organizations, treatment providers, and other community supports. Discussion includes recovery coaching program design, hospital and recovery community organization partnerships, staff education, stigma reduction, memoranda of understanding, onboarding and credentialing, 24/7 response systems, referral workflows, family engagement, follow-up after discharge, data tracking, and barriers encountered during implementation. The session includes examples from New Hampshire communities that implemented recovery coaching in emergency departments, including perspectives from recovery community organizations and hospital partners. This recording may be useful for recovery community organizations, hospitals, emergency department teams, peer recovery support workers, program administrators, behavioral health partners, and communities considering or strengthening recovery coaching in hospital settings.
