WALKING IN SUFFOLK | POLSTEAD | THE RED BARN MURDER

In the first video related to Halloween, I visited Polstead in Suffolk with Candice for a lovely 4 mile walk in and around the picturesque village, as well as the nearby village of Stoke by Nayland. Polstead is infamous as the location of the sensational Red Barn Murder which took place in 1827. Maria Marten was brutally murdered by William Corder, her lover whom she was having an affair with. They had been secretly meeting in the nearby barn every night (which burnt down in 1842), so called the Red Barn, and had planned to run away together to Ipswich. She had already given birth to an illegitimate child with Corder, which died in infancy and was buried in a nearby field. Both families wished for them to marry quickly and the local priest wanted Maria arrested for giving birth to a bastard child. Corder hatched the plan to escape to Ipswich with Maria, first meeting at the Red Barn, with her disguised in men's clothing. She never left the barn... A year later, Corder had escaped to London and begun a new life, throwing Maria's family off the scent with stories and lies, even writing letters to them. Maria's stepmother had been having vivid dreams in which Maria had been murdered in the Red Barn. She persuaded her husband to search the barn. He made a gruesome discovery... Maria's partially decomposed body was found in a grain sack under the floorboards. She had been shot, stabbed and strangled, Corder's green handkerchief was found still tied around her neck. He was found, arrested, and brought back to Polstead, where an inquest at the Cock Inn pub was held. He was hung in a public execution in Bury St Edmunds. The walk visited several sights of importance regarding the crime, including the sight of the Red Barn, the Cock Inn pub, Maria Marten's house that she was born in, the last house she lived in, WillIiam Corder's house and the church where she is buried (however her grave was plundered by souvenir hunters and now only a wooden plaque remains). This was a great walk and it felt very creepy to be in the same place where such a crime took place. The section to the site of the Red Barn will stay with me forever, the wind suddenly picked up and the temperature dropped! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
