Fly fishing the Kern River in California’s High Sierra backcountry. High in the Sierra Nevada—where the Golden Trout Wilderness meets Sequoia National Park—the landscape begins to feel almost foreign. Towering granite, open meadows, cold clear water, and native trout shaped by isolation and time. At moments, it feels like New Zealand. At others, maybe even the Alps. But this place is truly one of one. This film documents my first backcountry journey into California’s High Sierra—long miles, heavy packs, rugged terrain, and some of the best wild fly fishing I’ve ever experienced in the United States. The cost is heavy and so is the pack. But to walk this path—this long, dusty path—is worth every step. There aren’t many places left that can truly shift an angler’s perspective, and words alone may not be enough to describe this wild corner of California.
