The national Nahdliyin figure from Trenggalek deliberately returned to his hometown to seek his parents' blessings before fully engaging in the contest for Indonesia's largest Islamic organization. Hery didn't simply visit his childhood home in Rejosari Hamlet, Salamrejo Village, Karangan District, Trenggalek. He used the emotional moment as an official sign of the start of the organization's consolidation toward the PBNU Chairmanship. "Today I returned home specifically to pay my respects to my parents and formally ask for their blessings. At the behest of the senior kiai and the encouragement of my friends, I declare myself ready to run as a candidate for Chairman of the PBNU for the 2026–2031 period," said Hery Haryanto Azumi. Parental Blessings Are the Main Compass of Life For Hery, seeking parental permission and blessings is not just a tradition, but a life principle he has held dear since childhood. He always begins every important decision by seeking advice, guidance, and approval from his father and mother. "Since childhood, every time I wanted to take a step or make a decision, I had to ask my parents' permission first. I needed their prayers, advice, and sincere support before taking any action," he said. Hery was born in Trenggalek on April 29, 1977, the eldest son of H. Suharso and Hj. Sumarmi. He spent his childhood in Trenggalek and completed his education at an elementary and junior high school in his hometown before moving abroad to continue his education and organizational activities. A Long Track Record from PMII to International Networks Hery is no stranger to the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) community. He led the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Muslim Student Association (PMII) from 2005 to 2007, served as Deputy Secretary General of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) from 2015 to 2018, and is currently active as Chairman of the Central Executive Board of the Nahdlatul Ulama Scholars Association (ISNU). Since the beginning of the reform era, Hery has been actively building international networks. His mastery of English has led many foreign media outlets and international researchers to seek his assistance as a source and translator for NU figures and student activists. "During the reform era, many foreign journalists sought out NU cadres who were fluent in English. My colleagues often asked me to help translate and explain the dynamics of the student movement and the development of NU," he recalled. He continued to nurture these relationships, establishing a strong international network. He said that the experience of discussing with foreign media outlets, academics, and foreign officials broadened his perspective on NU's role at the global level. "That experience tempered me and broadened my horizons about how NU can contribute to peace and civilization at the international level," he said. Claims Support in Several Regions Ahead of the PBNU Congress, Hery stated that his team is actively communicating and fostering relationships with various NU figures and administrators in various regions. He stated that he has met with NU regional leaders in Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Java. He also continues to communicate with branch administrators and visit senior clerics. "We have met with regional leaders from various islands and knelt down to ask for guidance from the senior clerics. Thank God, most of them have offered prayers and concrete support," he said. However, Hery declined to reveal the specific regions that have provided written support. He believes political communication remains highly dynamic and is a crucial part of the consolidation process leading up to the organization's official agenda. Upholding the Spirit of Nahdlatul Ulama Renewal Hery believes that Nahdlatul Ulama faces significant challenges in the future, particularly in strengthening the organization's role at the national and international levels. Therefore, he is promoting the spirit of renewal and strengthening organizational governance as his main ideas. "The kiai have high hopes that NU will bring about a renewed system and a new spirit. The goal is to make this organization stronger and more agile in facing the increasingly complex challenges of the times," he said.
