The texts read and reported below are taken from the CEI Bible. First Reading You killed Zechariah between the sanctuary and the altar. From the Second Book of Chronicles 2 Chronicles 24:17-25 After the death of Jehoiada, the leaders of Judah went to worship the king, who then listened to them. They neglected the temple of the Lord, the God of their fathers, to worship sacred poles and idols. Because of this, God's wrath fell on Judah and Jerusalem. The Lord sent them prophets to bring them back to him. They testified against them, but they were not listened to. Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood up among the people and said, "This is what God says: 'Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord? This is why you have not prospered; because you have forsaken the Lord, he has also forsaken you.'" But they conspired against him and, by the king's command, stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord's house. King Joash did not remember the kindness shown him by Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, but killed his son. As he died, he said, "May the Lord see and require it!" At the beginning of the following year, the Aramean army came up against Joash. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem, destroyed all the leaders among the people, and sent all the spoil to the king of Damascus. The Aramean army had come with only a few men, but the Lord delivered a large army into their hands, because they had forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors. They executed judgment on Joash. When they had departed, leaving him gravely ill, his servants conspired against him, because he had shed the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him in his bed. So he died, and they buried him in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings. The Word of the Lord. Responsorial Psalm From Psalm 88 (89) R. The mercy of the Lord endures forever. I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David, my servant. I will establish your descendants forever; throughout all generations I will build your throne. R. I will always keep my love for him; my covenant with him will be faithful. I will establish his descendants forever; his throne as the days of heaven. R. If his children forsake my law and do not walk in my statutes, if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments. R. I will punish their rebellion with the rod and their guilt with scourges. But my love I will not take away and my faithfulness I will never fail. R. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus Christ, though he was rich, became poor for your sake, so that you through his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9) Alleluia. Gospel Do not worry about tomorrow. From the Gospel according to Matthew Mt 6:24-34 At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, for your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. The word of the Lord.
