From the book of the prophet Jeremiah Jeremiah 20:10-13 I heard the slander of many: "Terror is on every side! Denunciate him! Yes, we will denounce him." All my friends expected my downfall: "Perhaps he will be deceived, so we can prevail over him, we will take our revenge." But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior, therefore my persecutors will falter and will not prevail; They will be ashamed because they will not succeed. It will be an everlasting and indelible shame. O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, may I see your vengeance on them, for to you I have entrusted my cause! Sing praise to the Lord, praise the Lord, for he has delivered the life of the poor from the hands of evildoers. The Word of God. Responsorial Psalm From Psalm 69 R. In your abundant mercy, answer me, O God. For your sake I bear insult, and shame covers my face; I have become a stranger to my brothers, a foreigner to my mother's children. For zeal for your house has consumed me, the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me. R. But I turn my prayer to you, Lord, in the time of your favor. O God, in your abundant goodness, answer me, in the faithfulness of your salvation. Answer me, Lord, for your love is good; turn to me in your great tenderness. R. Let the poor see it and be glad; you who seek God, take courage, for the Lord listens to the poor and does not despise his own who are in prison. Let the heavens and the earth sing praise to him, the seas and all that teems in them. R. Second Reading The gift of grace is not like a fall. From the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans Rom 5:12-15 Brothers and sisters: Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. For until the Law, sin was in the world. And though sin is not imputed where the Law is absent, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned—a likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the gift of grace is not like the trespass. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more have the grace of God, and the free gift by grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. The Word of God. From the Gospel according to Matthew Mt 10:26-33 At that time, Jesus said to his apostles: "Do not fear men, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or secret that will not be known. What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; but rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. Even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. Therefore whoever acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; But whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven."
