Stewart Island — The Start of Something Unexpected | Part 1

Stewart Island has long felt remote, wild, and quietly legendary — a place many people dream of visiting. In this first episode of our Rakiura Track journey, we arrive on Stewart Island and take our first steps into the southern forest. Day one brought everything we had hoped for — wild coastline, deep bush, and that feeling of being far from the familiar. But even in those early steps, we began to notice things that stayed with us. This is Part 1 of our Stewart Island walking series — a story of first impressions, quiet forests, and what it means to truly walk through a landscape. We’re not experienced trampers — just travellers learning through the places we move through. And sometimes, walking slowly reveals more than we expect. Thanks for walking with us.
