šØThe Entire History of the 1987 GT FREESTYLE LINEUP š„š„š„š„š„
In this documentary, we take a deep dive into the complete 1987 GT Freestyle lineup, a year widely considered the pinnacle of freestyle BMX for GT. This breakdown removes the confusion and ambiguity surrounding the models, starting with the entry-level Performer and working all the way up to the prestigious Team Model. In 1987, GT offered a freestyle bike for every level of rider. Starting at around $200, the Performer was GTās entry-level freestyle bike. Designed to be cost-effective, it introduced beginners to the world of freestyle riding. Unlike the higher-end models, the frame was not constructed entirely from 4130 chromoly, helping keep the price accessible. Next in the lineup was the Pro Performer. This model introduced GTās newly designed Coin Roll (S-Bend) frame set, giving riders improved geometry and durability. With a starting price of roughly $260, the Pro Performer catered to intermediate riders looking for a serious upgrade. Stepping up again was the Pro Freestyle Tour. Built on the same frame platform as the Pro Performer but outfitted with higher-end components, it was aimed at more advanced riders. Pricing started around $330 with mag wheels, or about $350 with the newly introduced Superlace wheel set. At the very top of the lineup sat the Pro Freestyle Tour Team Model, the crĆØme de la crĆØme of GTās freestyle offering. Built for professional riders who demanded the best components available, this bike represented the pinnacle of GT freestyle engineering in 1987. The Team Model started around $400 with mag wheels, while a fully optioned version with Superlace wheels could run $480 to $500, depending on the bike shop. What set the Team Model apart were its premium components, including SR Power Series three-piece cranks and Superlace hubs laced to Ukai rims, delivering top-tier performance and durability. For many riders and collectors, 1987 remains the defining year for GT freestyle bikes, representing the peak of innovation, design, and style during the golden era of BMX.
