La India: la tierra de las mujeres sin útero | ARTE.tv Documentales

India 🇮🇳 is the world's second-largest sugar producer. At the bottom of the production chain are the sugarcane cutters who provide the very cheap raw material at a very high price for their health. This physically demanding work in extreme conditions causes them unbearable pain. Without any social protection, many workers decide to undergo a hysterectomy, that is, the removal of the uterus. It is one of the best-kept secrets of rural India. An invisible evil that corrodes the bodies of thousands of women on the Indian subcontinent. While the hysterectomy rate is 2 per 1,000 in the West, it reaches 17 per 1,000 in India, and multiplies to a rate of 350 per 1,000 in the state of Maharashtra, in the west of the country, in what is known as the "Sugar Belt." India has approximately 1.5 million people working in the sugarcane fields 🎋. Approximately half are women, belonging to the lowest castes of Indian society. These women, who have already given birth to several children and for whom menstruation is a burden, are deceived and convinced of the necessity of the operation, without knowing the risks to their health and without understanding that these medical procedures are completely unnecessary. Without days off, without social security, without being able to miss work due to illness. After an extremely expensive operation for their meager wages, paid for by themselves—between 250 and 500 euros—these agricultural workers return, mutilated, to the sugarcane fields to pay off their debt, at the mercy of the greed of the sugar barons.
