Ramarathnam (1917 – 15 November 2008) was a renowned Carnatic musician, vocalist, composer, teacher, author, and musicologist, widely regarded as a "musician's musician" for his exceptional artistry and scholarship. Born in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, to V. Subbaramiah, he received his early musical training under Ganakala Sindhu D. Subbaramiah and Palghat Someshwara Bhagavathar before undergoing nearly a decade of rigorous gurukula training under the legendary violin maestro Mysore T. Chowdiah in Mysore. Beginning his concert career in the early 1940s, he performed extensively across India and the United States for more than fifty years and was an 'A' Grade artist of All India Radio, admired for his distinctive style that seamlessly blended raga, bhava, tala, and classical tradition with remarkable simplicity. A memorable milestone in his performing career was his participation in the 1958 Madras Music Academy concert alongside stalwarts such as Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar during the year his guru received the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi award. As an educator, he served as the first Vice-Principal of Ayyanar College of Music, Mysore, from 1945 and later became Professor of Music and the first Principal of the University College of Music and Dance at the University of Mysore, where he trained generations of musicians before continuing as an Emeritus Professor under the University Grants Commission. A gifted composer, he wrote around twenty-five kritis in Sanskrit, Telugu, and Kannada, often incorporating chittaswarams and using the mudra "Rama," while also authoring or co-authoring about thirteen influential books on the theoretical and practical aspects of Carnatic music, many published by the University of Mysore's Prasaranga Press. Honoured with numerous awards and recognitions throughout his distinguished career, Ramarathnam left an enduring legacy as a performer, scholar, composer, and teacher whose lifelong dedication greatly enriched the Carnatic music tradition until his passing on 15 November 2008.
