The Art They Couldn't Erase (And the Buildings We Should Never Have Abandoned)
Before the colonial borders. Before the World Bank reports. Before 'developing nation' became the shorthand — there were kingdoms. There were bronze casters. There were architects who built walls that breathed. In this video I walk through the history of Nigerian and African expressionism — from the Ife portrait heads of the 12th century to the Zaria Art Society's Natural Synthesis rebellion in the 1950s — and I make the case that what happened to African art is the same thing that is happening to African architecture right now. We have a 10,000-year tradition of building for our climate. Thermal mass. Passive ventilation. Clay walls that regulate temperature without electricity. And we are replacing it with glass towers that trap heat and require generators to function. That is not modernisation. That is dependency dressed up as progress. This video includes footage from the Tate Modern Nigeria exhibit — and it should make you angry and proud at the same time. Stay grounded. Stay global. Stay Black. 🖤 theblacknarrative.news #NigerianArt #AfricanArchitecture #PanAfrican
