Weiler Matador Lathe - Norton Mystery Finally Solved (Original Gears Revealed!) New Oil Seal Pt. 14
Part 14 of the Weiler Matador restoration, the investigation into the Norton gearbox finally reaches its conclusion. After reassembling the shafts, reinstalling the selector mechanism, and testing the opposite gears on the leadscrew shaft, the truth becomes clear: The oversized gear diameters are original. They were not remade, not modified, and not mistakes. They are part of the original Weiler engineering. Many gears in the Norton gearbox do not follow the standard ISO module 1.5 De because they use profile corrections to maintain the correct center distance with the sliding pinion. The driven gears even have a slightly conical tooth profile, designed to mesh smoothly and quietly with the classic module 1.5 driving gear. This level of engineering explains why the system works the way it does — and why it was impossible to understand without disassembling everything. During this process, I also restored the gear selector (which had been reassembled incorrectly in the past), replaced the oil seals, cleaned all components, and verified the real mesh with the gearbox fully assembled. In the end, the gears were replaced at some point… but they are original Weiler gears, factory‑ground and lapped, not aftermarket parts. I also replaced the Oilseals This episode closes the mystery and prepares the ground for Part 15. #WeilerMatador #LatheRestoration #NortonGearbox #GearTrain #Machining #VintageLathe #Engineering #Metalworking #MachineRestoration #WorkshopProjects #WeilerLathe #gearcutting #oilseal #oilsealreplacement For any questions or requests, or even just for a greeting, write me at: [email protected]
