On her fragile first day back at work after rehab, actress Suzanne Vale (Meryl Streep) is already on thin ice. Her day goes from bad to worse when she receives notes from two different producers, both suggesting she's "holding back." Utterly exasperated, her humiliation is compounded when she then overhears her director, Simon (Simon Cawell), and the head of wardrobe discussing how terrible she looks. At the end of a long and demoralizing day, she's leaving the set only to be approached by the charming producer Jack Faulkner (Dennis Quaid).
