It examines a subtle spiritual issue: how a sincere desire to serve God, if not combined with understanding, humility, and ecclesiastical discernment, can lead a person not to Christ, but away from Him. Patristic commentaries reveal that zeal in itself is not evil—on the contrary, it is necessary as the fire of faith, but without the "helmsmanship" of discernment, it turns into a destructive force. It is especially emphasized that the danger of such zeal often lies in its outward righteousness: a person may be convinced that they stand for the truth, but in reality defend their own understanding of the truth, replacing the spirit of the law with the letter. The sermon demonstrates that true spiritual discernment is always linked to humility, obedience to the Church, and love, which does not repel, but leads to salvation.
