Mount Maeoni is one of the 75 training grounds known as "Nabiki." According to legend, approximately 1,300 years ago, while En no Gyoja, the founder of Shugendo, was training in this area, a demon couple named Maeoni and Gooni lived on Mount Ikoma. After En no Gyoja told them, "You are no longer demons. You have become human," the couple became his disciples and dedicated themselves to guiding practitioners and providing them with food. The couple's five children (Oniue, Onido, Onikuma, Onitsugu, and Onisuke) also established their own temple lodgings and served the ascetics, a duty that has been passed down to their descendants. The pure hearts of the Oni couple, who upheld their teachings and served the people, still live on in this mountain today.
