It is also well known as the Alabaster Mosque because its walls are covered in white marble (a type of marble called alabaster). It was built in the Ottoman Turkish style, inspired by the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, rather than in the traditional Egyptian style. Therefore, it is characterized by a massive central dome and tall, pencil-pointed minarets. It was constructed by Muhammad Ali Pasha, known as the founder of modern Egypt in the 19th century, to demonstrate his rule and to serve as his burial site after death. Located on one of the highest points in Cairo, it is a landmark visible from anywhere in the city. Interior Passage of the Citadel of Saladin It is a long passageway stretching between the massive and rugged stone walls characteristic of medieval ruins. The uniquely shaped spire visible in the front is the minaret of the Al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque.
