The Catholic Church, especially the Carmelites, venerate him as their spiritual father. Elijah is a prophet who courageously fought against King Ahab and Queen Jezebel when the people of Israel forgot the one God and began to worship the false god Baal. The incident of his challenging the four hundred and fifty false prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, and his prayer to bring fire down from heaven, demonstrating the power of the living God, is well-known in history. His great miracles were to bring rain after three and a half years of severe drought through prayer and to bring the son of the widow of Zarephath to life. God appeared to him in a calm wind on Mount Horeb. Finally, after completing his mission, he was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire while his disciple Elisha, who did not surrender to death, looked on. Elijah also appeared with Moses to bear witness to Jesus during the transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor.
