Las turbulencias de Chile: Allende y Pinochet (1970-1990)

The contemporary history of Chile between 1970 and 1990 is the tragic tale of a country turned into a guinea pig during the Cold War, dragged along by opposing fanaticisms. Far from romanticized narratives, this text dissects both decades with stark realism and facts. It all began in 1970 with Salvador Allende, who came to power with a precarious 36.6% of the vote. Lacking a true majority, he attempted to force a socialist revolution that nationalized the economy and expropriated land. This self-sacrifice, financed through uncontrolled money printing, led to an abysmal deficit, hyperinflation exceeding 600%, chronic shortages, and the collapse of the country. The institutional disaster paved the way for the violent coup d'état of 1973. Augusto Pinochet established a tyranny that handed economic management over to the "Chicago Boys." They applied a liberal shock of massive privatizations and deregulation which, while integrating Chile into the global market, caused two severe economic collapses (1975 and 1982), leaving almost 40% of the population in poverty. The much-touted "economic miracle" is a myth; Chile's true economic takeoff was forged later under democracy. However, the greatest cost of the military regime was undeniably human. Economic re-engineering required the extermination of the opposition through brutal and systematic state terrorism: thousands of murders, tortures, and disappearances, sanctioned by a complicit judiciary. Likewise, it is false that Pinochet relinquished power voluntarily; he lost the 1988 plebiscite and attempted to disregard the results, subsequently operating as a dangerous, extortionist strongman from within the army. In conclusion, the absolute economic ruin of an irresponsible utopia does not justify the horror of a dictatorship, nor vice versa. Fifty years later, amidst exiles, foreign interventions, and profound social divisions, Chile continues to struggle to definitively overcome the toxic totems and extreme political polarization inherited from its dark past.
