EL SIONISMO

I'm going to give you a fact that will probably surprise you. Or maybe not. According to several surveys, around 90% of Israeli Jews identify as Zionists. And if your first reaction is to think that Zionism is some kind of ancient religious belief, a mystical yearning that has existed since the Jews were expelled from their land two thousand years ago… wait, because you're wrong. And it's not your fault: almost no one explains it to you properly. Zionism is not a religion. It's a political movement. And, most importantly for understanding everything that came after: it wasn't born in Jerusalem or at the Dead Sea. It was born in Europe, in the midst of the nationalist fervor of the 19th century. It's contemporary with Italian and German unification. A child of the same zeitgeist, of the same idea: one nation, one state. For this idea to emerge among the Jews, a radical step had to be taken. They had to, in the words of the pioneers themselves, "abandon their messianic faith" and "free themselves from religious limitations." That is to say: stop waiting for a messiah to arrive and redeem them, and begin to take the reins of their own destiny here, in this world. Sounds beautiful, doesn't it? It was.
