小豆島　400年間におよぶ石の文化と足跡［小海（おみ）］

約400年前に行われた徳川期における大坂城普請。 瀬戸内海に浮かぶ小豆島は当時幕府が所管する天領であった。 この小海（おみ）地区では、豊前小倉藩　細川越中守が石材を切り出し、大坂城へ運んだとされる。現在もなお、この地に残された石群に触れることができ、またそれらにある刻印は現在の大阪城・石垣に残る刻印と付合する。この大坂城普請をきっかけに、小豆島は石の島と呼ばれるまでに石材産業が盛んになった。 明治に入り、火薬による採石が始まる。これにより手作業で切り出していた石材の作業スピードが格段に向上し、島中で石丁場が開かれることとなる。切り出された石材は、建築資材や灯籠、鳥居など日本中へ出荷された。 その後、コンクリートに置き換わり石材需要が低くなってゆく中、今なお石工として未来へ向かう職人がここにいるのである。 撮影協力 柴田早穂さん 大川大地さん 橋本たろうさん 小豆島石丁場調査委員会 大坂城パークマネージメント株式会社 ジャンボフェリー株式会社 In the Omi district of this island, it is said that Hosokawa Etchu-no-kami of the Kokura Domain in Buzen quarried stone here and shipped it to Osaka Castle. Even today, the clusters of stones left behind can still be touched, and the carved marks found on them match those still visible on the stone walls of Osaka Castle. This project sparked the growth of Shodoshima’s stone industry, which flourished to the point that the island became known as the “Island of Stone.” With the arrival of the Meiji era, quarrying with explosives began. This dramatically increased the pace of work once done entirely by hand, and stone quarries opened across the island. The stone extracted here was shipped throughout Japan — used in construction, stone lanterns, torii gates, and more. Later, as concrete replaced stone and demand declined, the industry faded — yet even now, stonemasons remain here, carrying the craft forward into the future.
