I Became What I Hated

I BECAME WHAT I HATED is Track IX from the Christian testimony album FROM DEAD ENDS TO KINGDOM ROADS. This is one of the most personal tracks on the album. I grew up witnessing the damage caused by methamphetamine, alcohol, household instability, and generational pain. I told myself I would never become like the things that hurt my family. Later, I found myself repeating many of the same patterns. I began using marijuana and alcohol at a young age, later used mushrooms and acid, and eventually became trapped in methamphetamine addiction. I smoked, snorted, and ate methamphetamine but never used needles. This track does not glorify drug use, overdose, altered states, or destructive living. It tells the truth about how pain can repeat itself when wounds remain untreated, how addiction disguises bondage as relief, and how excuses can delay the repentance needed for freedom. My childhood influenced the battlefield, but it did not remove my responsibility for the choices I made or the people I hurt. Freedom began when I stopped defending the darkness and allowed Jesus Christ to expose it. I became clean from drugs in November 2022 and sober from alcohol in April 2023. Recovery has required surrender, truth, prayer, renewed thinking, accountability, and learning to live from a new identity in Christ. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV I was that man. I am not that man. Jesus Christ made me new.
