Baby Seal Rescued from Illegal Gill Nets

Antoine and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) are noticing an increasing amount of Cape Fur Seals, especially pups being entangled in illegal gill nets lately. On this morning out at Pelican Point they caught 2 within 15 minutes of each other. The first pup was entangled in a slightly thicker, stronger gill net that was wrapped around his neck, face and through his mouth. They managed to cut him free and he had sustained no damage. Shortly thereafter, they ran after a seal that was trapped in a big ball of commercial fishing line. Antoine got him in the net, and Naude scanned the area for any other entanglements. At the last moment he saw a young female pup covered in a very fine, thin gill net. He caught her by hand and it took them quite a while to cut loose the many fine lines around her neck and face. This thin line had started cutting into the pup a little but the damage was minimal.
