Canada Released 16 Bison Into a Dead Valley — What They Did With Hooves and Wallows Was Unbelievable
#BisonReintroductionBanff #BisonHoovesAndWallows #BanffBisonEcologicalImpact In February 2017, Parks Canada opened a shipping container in the Panther Valley of Banff National Park and released sixteen plains bison onto ground that had not felt a wild bison hoof in more than 140 years. By 2024, those sixteen animals had become more than 130. But what was happening underneath the hooves was the part nobody fully predicted. The herd had spread across a 1,200-square-kilometer backcountry zone, adapted to high-elevation mountain terrain, and begun reshaping the valley in ways that classical mountain ecology textbooks had never described. The reintroduction was officially a pilot. Seven years in, it was producing ecological effects that researchers are still working to fully characterize, and some of what the bison are doing to the land, even the project managers admit, does not match what the models said should happen in the Canadian Rockies.
