St. Germains Level Crossing, East Lothian
Date filmed: Monday the 9th of September 2024 Videos filmed between 10:51 and 11:18 Route: East Coast Main Line (ECML) Between Longniddry (LND) and Prestonpans (PST) Stations Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Filming location: St. Germains, Seton Mains (EH32 0QZ) A variety of trains are seen passing this level crossing at speed in this video. This level crossing is located between Longniddry and Prestonpans right at the top of the East Coast Main Line on a small, quiet access road; it's the last public highway level crossing before the line's northern terminus of Edinburgh Waverley, and is soon to be the only public highway level crossing in East Lothian. It's located right beside a 70mph dual carriageway road, and there is very little safe space to stand on one side of the crossing - provided me with quite an interesting experience of getting that shot though I remained safe! The alarms here are loud, and the barriers date back to the 1990s though the boom arms themselves are new. There is a total of 5 sets of lights at this overall rather interesting crossing, and two of these are back-to-back for visibility. The intro shot at the start of the video looks across the Firth of Forth to the urban areas around Kirkcaldy. It was around this time of day that trains were beginning to be turned back at Newcastle following a serious incident further south (thoughts with those involved), and lots of disruption was to follow. The last train featured was the infamous Aberdeen to Penzance service, or at least it would have been. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy these videos! You've another run of Scotland crossings coming your way from my second trip up there last year (quite a lot shorter than before, however) - it was so nice to revisit!
