What looked to be rather plain on a hanger turns out to be a gorgeous 1930’s wedding dress.
A 1935 silk Deco dream. Worn by Katherine for her marriage to Henry at the family home on June 1, 1935 in Gildford Springs, Pennsylvania, this dress was donated by her great niece. Kathryn and Henry were married for 68 years. The dress was made by her mother, Jane Carbaugh. I am so impressed at the beautiful sewing - both by machine and with a lot of hand stitching- that Jane did in creating this dress. I researched vintage wedding dress patterns from the 1930s and found the match with McCall pattern 8331 from 1935. (swipe to see an image of the pattern) Further research states that the pattern was featured in McCall's Magazine June of 1935 and on the cover of McCall Advance Paris Styles also from June of 1935 (as the wedding took place June 1 of 1935, I am assuming this pattern was available prior to it being featured in those publications.) The dress features a slight cowl neckline, unique seaming on the skirt with a slightly overlapped front, a matching silk waist tie and amazing sleeves- oh how I love those sleeves!! The dress also came with a waist sash, ts headpiece/ veil and the stockings Kathryn wore, with a note in her hand writing stating as such. The dress as found was just in need of a basic cleaning, and I did so with Dirty Labs. This dress is a prime example of how something can look on a hanger vs on a mannequin/ form can be completely different. I am so grateful for the beautiful donations I receive and honored to be their temporary stewards to see them into their next journey. #beforeandafter #30sweddingdress #howto #vintageweddingdresscleaning #vintageweddingdress
