How did the Chinese end up in Mendocino CA?!?!?
The early Chinese that came to the US settled in different parts of California for different reasons: San Francisco/Monterey was where the ships from China landed Sacramento/Stockton/Marysville were the gateway to the gold mines The northern goldmines in Yreka and Weaverville also attracted the Chinese The Sacramento Delta area (Locke/Isleton/Walnut Grove) hired the Chinese to build levees and work on agriculture The Central Pacific Railroad Company hired the Chinese to work on the southern extension towards Los Angeles, and thus the Chinese settled and helped developed the cities in the San Joaquin Valley (Fresno, Visalia, Hanford) How did the Chinese end up settling in Mendocino, a town up in California's north coast?! This time, I was invited to the Kwan Tai Temple in Mendocino for a history lesson and a tour from the lovely temple guardian/historian, Lorraine Hee-Chorley. Lorraine is the great-granddaughter of one of the first Chinese settlers in Mendocino who built the Kwan Tai Temple 武帝廟 which dates back to 1854, making the temple one of THE OLDEST Chinese Taoist Temples in all of the US. Lorraine explains how and why the Chinese ended up in Mendocino, what kind of jobs the Chinese had, the challenges the Chinese face, and also interesting stories of her experiences growing up in the area. For those who are interested in visiting the Kwan Tai Temple, the docent season is May - Oct, Sat 12-3pm, Sun 11-2pm. 45160 Albion St, Mendocino, CA 95460 Chinese in Mendocino County (Images of America): https://www.amazon.com/Chinese-Mendoc... (The book was put together by Lorraine Hee-Chorley) *Special thanks to Lorraine for the valuable Chinese history lesson and to Denise Lee for setting up this class. ===================================================== Shameless Self Promotions: Blog: http://bokable.blogspot.com/ Instagram: / jacksofftoadventures Facebook: / jacksofftoanotheradventure YouTube: / pepperboy1516 ===================================================== #kwantaitemple #chinesetemple #taoisttemple #chineseamericanhistory #mendocino #chinatown #chinatownenthusiast Chinatown Enthusiast Fish Taco Enthusiast Chinese American History Enthusiast Cabbage Enthusiast Plant Enthusiast
