There's a CHINATOWN in STOCKTON CA?! Checking out the once 3rd LARGEST Chinatown in CA (三埠)
Did you know that not only does Stockton (the city not the street) have a Chinatown, Stockton's Chinatown was once the 3rd LARGEST Chinatown in all of California??! When the Chinese first came to America, numerous Chinatowns were established throughout California. Since everyone landed in San Francisco first, San Francisco became the largest Chinatown, dubbed "Dai Fow" 大埠 (Big town). Sacramento became the 2nd largest Chinatown ("Yee Fow" 二埠, 2nd town) due to its proximity to the northern gold mines, the Sacramento Delta (for agriculture), and was also the western point of the Transcontinental Railroad. Stockton became the third largest Chinatown ("Sam Fow" 三埠, 3rd town) because Stockton was the gateway to the southern gold mines, and it was also close enough to Sacramento. Stockton's Chinatown was once a Chinese community full of life and activities. There were many businesses such as wash houses, grocery markets, and services of all kinds. However, due to racial discrimination and city planning, the community was hit with many obstacles, including a highway that was constructed right in the heart of Chinatown that forced many Chinatown buildings to be demolished. Even though the Stockton Chinese had to face numerous adversities, they were still able to expand outside of Chinatown through mainly education and other economic opportunities. Today, there are 2 parts to Chinatown, separated by the highway. How does it look like now? What's going on now?
