Deer Damage In Our Woodlands: CWS1 Deer Impact & Activity Survey
Join us in this film as we carry out a CWS1 Deer Impact & Activity Survey on a particular woodland site. This assessment is designed to identify browsing pressure, deer presence, and the effects on ground flora and natural regeneration — all key to ensuring the success of future woodland health and creation. At Cervus-UK, deer management is more than just 'population control' — it’s about protecting the future of our woodlands and the ecosystems they support. Conducting a detailed deer impact and activity survey is the starting point for any well-informed management strategy, giving landowners the insight they need to balance woodland regeneration with wider conservation aims. These surveys are also a key requirement for CWS1 (Deer Control and Management) grant applications, helping to boost biodiversity, support woodland resilience, and future-proof sites against the growing threats of climate change, pests, and disease. Filmed in early summer 2024, this walkthrough highlights the kind of deer signs we look for on-site. While the lush summer growth offers a beautiful backdrop, we usually carry out these surveys earlier in the year for better visibility across the woodland floor.
