He was filled with regret and, gazing at the sea, vaguely contemplated suicide. As night fell, still unable to make up his mind, he wandered the night streets when he spotted a beautiful woman he recognized. Almost unconsciously, he followed her. After walking for a while, she entered a coffee shop, and Aoyama naturally followed her. His pen name is a Japanese-style adaptation of the name of the novelist Edgar Allan Poe. He was a moving enthusiast, moving 46 times in his life. After graduating from Waseda University, he worked many jobs before making his debut as a writer in 1923 with "Two-Sen Copper Coin." His 1936 novel "The Phantom Twenty Faces" became a hit and was made into a series for young people. In his later years, he established the Edogawa Ranpo Prize with his own funds and continued his work through dictation despite suffering from Parkinson's disease.
