After graduating from junior high school, he joined a newspaper company and worked as a reporter for several newspapers for 24 years. While working as a reporter, he also engaged in writing activities, but after 1913 he became a full-time writer. He left behind many mystery novels and ghost stories, and his "Hanshichi Torimonocho" series, influenced by Sherlock Holmes, is particularly famous. He also translated many foreign ghost stories.
