One of the greatest gurus of business administration in Brazil, Vicente Falcone, has a phrase that I really like, which helps define what business management is. He says the following: “Managing is about achieving goals with the team doing things right.” And because I like this phrase so much, let's break it down into three parts and define what business management is? 1st - “Managing is about achieving goals.” What does achieving goals mean? If you own a company, you need to have goals. You can't go to your workplace, you can't wake up on Monday, go to the company without knowing where you're going. So, managing is about hitting targets! You need to understand what revenue you're aiming for, what costs and expenses you need to keep within a budget, whether you have customer satisfaction targets, employee satisfaction targets, in short, you need to understand what the goals are, the main indicators that make up the direction of your company. Because if your company has direction, you can grow, you can evolve, in short, you can hit targets. 2nd - "With the team, managing is about hitting targets." What does "with the team" mean? You'll hardly get very far alone. There's even a saying: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." And to reach your goals, to hit your targets, you'll need the support of people. Perhaps at this stage of your business you don't have a very large team or many people working with you, but inevitably you will need to work with people, whether employees, partners, collaborators, associates, etc. How do you build this team? To achieve your goals, you need to understand which people you need to complement your skills, knowledge, and attitudes with to reach your objective. Therefore, understanding how to recruit people if you are hiring, or understanding which people you need to connect with to achieve your goals, is very important. Managing your relationships makes all the difference in taking the right steps, avoiding wasted time, and developing yourself. Because as you connect with someone who may know something you don't, as you interact with that person you will also develop, and vice versa. You will help that person develop. So, if you have clear goals and then you connect with people—whether employees, partners, associates, suppliers, in short, people who will help you reach your objective—you have a much better chance of having a much more assertive business management. 3rd - "Doing it right." "Managing is about hitting goals with the team by doing it right." What is doing it right? When you have a clear plan of the step-by-step process of what needs to be done, you will hardly waste time. Of course, in the market there is a process of trial and error. Often what you planned doesn't always work out, but when you plan and put it on paper, understand the necessary paths to stay focused on your objectives, the result comes. And it comes perhaps at a much faster speed than you imagined when you started your business journey. In my view, this is the best definition of business management. In practice, doing business management means that you need to understand what elements and drivers will help you reach your objective. It's not enough to just have technical knowledge. While technical knowledge can motivate you to start a business and even yield short-term results, if you want longevity and profitability, understanding business management is crucial. Stay updated, seek out resources, read books, take courses, and specialize. As you develop your technical knowledge and simultaneously your business management skills, you'll tend to achieve results much faster. I see many entrepreneurs with extraordinary ideas and truly innovative solutions, but they often fail when implementing their businesses. Because managing means achieving goals with the team doing things right. And to do that, developing your business management knowledge is essential. #businessmanagement #entrepreneurship #smallbusinesses #businessconsulting
