Especially since it's an SME, the involvement of these investors will be much greater. You need to understand if you need capital to grow, to leverage your business, or if you need capital to get your house in order. Perhaps you've taken out some loans, and some cash flow isn't great, so you need to evaluate your reason. Typically, investors with a growth mindset are sought; the investor wants to put money into a business so that, later on, that money will return at a multiple, so it's important to understand this. And of course, along with the money comes an important responsibility, which is accountability. So, whenever you're looking for an investor, in addition to understanding the reason, you need to be aware that your investor will be a person, or a group of people, to whom you will need to be accountable. Because there's the investor partner, who puts in the money, isn't involved in the day-to-day operations of the company, but from time to time you have to report on how the business is doing, whether the investment is bringing the expected results. And there's the managing partner, who, in addition to putting in money, will participate in the day-to-day operations, they will occupy a role within the company. So, this principle of understanding is important: what you will do with these resources and what the participation model of these investors will be. So, once you understand your "whys," that's when you need to make sure your house is truly in order. It's important to assess whether your financial management is well-rounded, whether the numbers are transparent, whether you have all the information in a clear and organized way, and that's the first thing an investor will ask, not only from a financial point of view, but also from a strategic one. When an investor wants to invest in a business, they want to understand the entrepreneur's vision in the short, medium, and long term. So, what are your goals, strategies to achieve those goals? What are the processes like, how are they designed to achieve that goal? What is the profile of your team? So, all these pillars need to be very well organized so that the investor has an exact clarity of how you are running your business. That's management. Now that you have total clarity on how your company is doing, your "whys," you need to do a valuation. What is that? It's actually about measuring how much your business is worth, so you can present that to an investor to assess what percentage of your company you're going to make available for an investor to get into your business. So, valuation is very important. And from there, you prepare to make your offer. There's a very famous concept called a sales pitch. You probably know some programs like Shark Tank, where the entrepreneur has the opportunity to sell their business in 2 minutes. So, it's important that you prepare and develop a sales pitch that will show the qualities of your business, and also the opportunities, because depending on who you approach, you won't have much time to explain this opportunity. And finally, what you need to do is tell the world that you are looking for these investors. And then, it's literally about chasing after companies or people who have potential and the characteristics you are looking for to put money into your business. So, there are investment funds that are always looking for companies to invest in, to leverage their investments, but in the world of small businesses, which might be your reality, the connections and relationships you have can spark the interest of entrepreneurs who are at a different level of financial success, and so on. Therefore, developing your network is super important for you to actually get an investor for your business. How to do this? By participating in business groups, talking to other entrepreneurs in your market and in different markets to understand the realities of other people, taking courses, training, participating in networking groups, and so on. The more you expose yourself, the more you expand your network, the more connections you will make and, consequently, the more opportunities may arise for you to get an investor for your business.
