Hickok's Death According to Newspapers
James Butler Hickok, known to the world as "Wild Bill", died at the hands of an assassin on August 2nd, 1876 in Deadwood. Experience how Americans first learned of Hickok's death by listening to a selection of newspaper articles that serve as his obituary. Admired, feared, praised and loathed, "Wild Bill" Hickok was a fascinating character of the wild west. Hickok's time as lawman was riddled with controversy as more than one man fell victim to his pistol. After a brief time with Buffalo Bill Cody, where Hickok played himself on the stage to eager audiences, Hickok decided to go to Deadwood in the Black Hills in search of his fortune...but that quickly ended by an assassin's bullet. He was buried by friends, but both his admirers and detractors would write his obituaries.
