West Coast Main Line Trains at Oxenholme Lake District on May 12th 2026
1st visit to Oxenholme Lake District on the West Coast Main line and Windermere Line Featuring services from Avanti West Coast, Northern, Transpennine Express and some freight. Also a first glimpse of a Lumo Class 222/6 on test in preparation for its service launch over a week after filming for its West Coast operations between London Euston and Stirling. Oxenholme Lake District was opened in 1847 by the former Lancaster and Carlisle Railway as Kendal Junction The former course of the line was originally planned to run through Kendal which is nowadays served by Northern services on the Windermere Line. The plan was considered the idea to build over a 2 mile tunnel North of Kendal at the time however the idea was abandoned which a line to the east of Kendal was chosen which the course of todays West Coast Main Line follows before the Shap Summit on its way towards Carlisle via Penrith. The WCML to Carlisle opened from Oxenholme in December 1847 This resulted the formation of another route towards Kendal and Windermere by the Kendal and Windermere Railway which would open its line in April 1847 although to note that the terminus of the line at Windermere station is actually located in the village of Birthwaite being 0.75 miles of Windermere itself. Kendal Junction became Oxenholme in 1860 with its present name of Oxenholme Lake District dating from 1988. The stations popularity with the Lakes at one time was even fictionised as Strickland Junction by later author Arthur Ransome in The Swallows and Amazons Book Series including one book written in 1936 called "Pigeon Post" Not far to the North of the station is the area of Grayrigg where a derailment occurred on the evening of Friday 23th February 2007 when a Virgin Trains 9 car Class 390 Pendolino (390033) left Oxenholme Lake District bound for Glasgow Central however after crossing the Docker Viaduct the front half of the train derailed over a faulty set of points which at 95mph. Of the 109 passengers and crew onboard 1 passenger died and 59 were injured. It turned out that an inspection of the faulty set of points that led to the derailment was originally supposed to be carried out 5 days before the derailment on February 18th however it never took place and the faulty set of points went unchecked. The accident drew comparisons of another rail disaster of the 2002 Potters Bar Accident where that was caused by faulty set of points. Although Network Rail was held responsible for the accident and later plead guilty were fined over £4 million pounds in April 2012 The Class 390 Pendolino itself was praised by industry experts for its structural integrity in the accident which head of Virgin Trains at the time Richard Branson described the Pendolino as a Tank. The station itself nowadays served by Avanti West Coast, Transpennine Express and Northern services. Avanti West Coast serve hourly in London Bound direction as well as hourly in the North direction including hourly to Glasgow Central and 1 every 2 hours to Edinburgh respectively. Transpennine Express operated by Class 397s for most of its services between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Cetnral and Edinburgh although some Manchester to Edinburgh workings are operated by Class 802 Novas The other service is 3 trains a day between Liverpool Lime Street and Glasgow Central which are also operated by Class 397s. Northern services operated by Class 195s which run hourly to and from Windermere with 1 every 2 hours extended to Manchester Airport via Bolton. Lumo services between London Euston and Stirling will pass through here which at the time of filming was undergoing driver training which in the short term operate with Class 222 Meridians converted to 6 car formations and renumbered as 222/6s however in the long term its planned that Electric Trains will take over Lumo (West Coast) operations. Lumo services began operations over a week after filming with a press launch on May 22nd with a part passenger service launch a few days later although a full service operations is due to operate by end of July.
