West Coast Main Line Trains at Wigan North Western on May 11th 2026

3rd visit to Wigan North Western on the West Coast Main Line Featuring services from Avanti West Coast, Northern and Transpennine Express, some freight and as well as Northern services going in and out of nearby Wigan Wallgate plus there also an appearance from the Midland Pullman HST. Wigan North Western was first opened back in 1838 as Wigan although was renamed Wigan North Western in 1924 Being situated 110 yards away is nearby Wigan Wallgate served by non electrified Northern services mainly to and from Blackburn, Stalybridge, Manchester Oxford Road via Salford Crescent to Headbolt Lane and Southport mainly provided by Class 150s and Class 156 Sprinters as well as Class 769s whilst the services to and from Leeds via the Calder Valley Line via Rochdale and alternatively Brighouse or Halifax are provided by Class 158s which terminate at Wigan Wallgate. At the time of filming due to Transpennine Upgrade work just outside Huddersfield meant that all Leeds Northern services to and from Wigan Wallgate were terminating at Todmorden. There was originally a 3rd station called Wigan Central which was formerly opened in 1892 by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway however would close in 1964 Although on the platform layout on the West Coast Main Line may have 6 platforms however only 5 are in use with Platform 2 being one of 2 bay platforms was taken out of use when Platform 3 was extended. Platform 1 is used by occasional services to Liverpool Lime Street via Newton-le-Willows services during weekday mornings as well all day Sunday services to and from Stalybridge and Manchester Victoria. Platform 3 is a bay Platform used by trains services mainly morning or evening to and from Manchester Victoria as well as Empty Stock Northern Services reversing into Spring Branch Stabling Sidgs which is located to the South. Platforms 4 and 5 used by Avanti West Coast services to and from London Euston to Blackpool North, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh which are mainly provided by Class 390 Pendolinos Northern services provide a half hourly all stopper service via the City Line mainly provided by Class 323s and 331s to and from Liverpool Lime Street which terminate via Platform 6 with only a few in the morning and evening going via Newton-le-Willows on the Chat Moss Line. Whilst hourly services are provided beyond here to Blackpool North which are nowadays provided by Class 331s Transpennine Express services run 3 trains a day to and from Liverpool Lime Street and Glasgow Central served by Class 397s.
