Vehicle History: KITT (short for Knight Industries Two Thousand) is a fictional computer that controls the high-tech Knight 2000 (a modified Pontiac Firebird Trans Am T-top). KITT was voiced by William Daniels in the original 1980 series. In the original 1980 series, K.I.T.T. was conceived and designed by Wilton Knight, the brilliant but eccentric billionaire and founder of the Foundation for Law and Government (commonly abbreviated as "FLAG") and its parent company, Knight Industries. K.I.T.T.'s main cybernetic processor was first installed in a mainframe computer used by the United States government in Washington, D.C., but Wilton saw a better use for it in the Foundation's anti-crime mission, and the system was eventually installed in a vehicle. KITT was actually the second vehicle built by Knight Industries with artificial intelligence. Its predecessor was K.A.R.R. (Knight Automated Roving Robot). K.A.R.R. was programmed for self-preservation, but this proved dangerous to the Foundation's interests. He was later deactivated and placed in storage, while K.I.T.T. was handed over to a new agent, Michael Knight (who was named Michael Long before joining the Foundation). Unlike his predecessor, K.I.T.T. is programmed primarily to protect Michael and all human life at all costs. This is clearly demonstrated in the pilot episode when Michael asks Devon Miles if K.I.T.T. will protect anyone who controls him. Devon replies that K.I.T.T.'s primary function is to protect human life, especially Michael. #KITT #DeAgostini #KnightRider
