The history of the TV series vehicle K.I.T.T.: KITT (short for Knight Industries Two Thousand) is a fictional computer that controls the high-tech Knight 2000 car (a modified Pontiac Firebird Trans Am T-top). KITT was voiced by William Daniels in the original version. In the original story of the 1980s series, K.I.T.T. was conceived and designed by Wilton Knight, a brilliant but eccentric billionaire and founder of the "Foundation for Law and Government" (commonly abbreviated as "FLAG") and its parent company, Knight Industries. K.I.T.T.'s main cybernetic processor was first installed in a mainframe computer used by the United States government in Washington, D.C. However, Wilton saw a better use for it in the Foundation's mission against crime, and the system was ultimately installed in the vehicle. KITT was actually the second car built by Knight Industries with artificial intelligence. Its predecessor was K.A.R.R. (Knight Automated Roving Robot). K.A.R.R. was programmed for self-preservation, but this proved dangerous to the Foundation's interests. It was later deactivated and placed in storage, while K.I.T.T. was handed over to a new agent – Michael Knight (who was named Michael Long before joining the foundation). Unlike its predecessor, K.I.T.T. is programmed primarily to protect Michael and all human life at all costs. This is clearly seen in the pilot episode when Michael asks Devon Miles if K.I.T.T. will protect anyone driving it. Devon replies that K.I.T.T.'s primary function is to protect human life, and specifically Michael's. #KITT #DeAgostini #KnightRider
