We accompany Germania around 100 AD through seven stages: Germania is not a wilderness teeming with barbarians, but an ordered, religious, and proudly armed world. This episode debunks three persistent myths: horned helmets (a 19th-century invention), a lack of ironworking skills (disproven by bloomery furnaces and blacksmithing finds), and the supposed uncivilized nature of the Germanic tribes, corrected by Tacitus himself, who wrote his Germania during precisely these years. Reconstructed based on Tacitus' Germania, archaeological finds of combined dwellings and stables, bog bodies, and modern studies on Germanic iron smelting. Note: Some of the images shown were reconstructed using AI. Direct contemporary visual sources are lacking for many scenes from everyday Germanic life around 100 AD. The depictions are historically grounded approximations, not exact representations. In some scenes, inaccuracies or anachronisms may occur—for example, clothing that isn't entirely historically accurate (occasionally featuring cuts, headscarves, or details that appear more medieval), inconsistent hairstyles, objects like glass or metal goods in slightly too modern forms, or architectural details on the houses (e.g., a type of chimney on the longhouses) that aren't precisely documented. The large ring brooches used to fasten some cloaks are also not entirely correct. Around 100 AD, smaller bow or shoulder brooches (bow-shaped garment pins) were worn, which were fastened at the side of the shoulder. We placed the utmost importance on historical accuracy and reduced these discrepancies as much as possible; however, they cannot be completely avoided in AI reconstructions. The spoken content is based on the current state of research. What surprised you the most? That the Germanic tribes dyed their hair fiery red, the warriors more often than the women? The prophetic power of the women, whose words could lead entire tribes to war? Or that the horned helmet never existed and yet has survived to this day? Leave a like and subscribe to the channel. The insights are often closer to reality than you might think.
