Uttoxeter (Hockley) Level Crossing, Staffordshire

Date filmed: Saturday the 15th of March 2025 Video filmed at: 14:55 | 15:11 Route: Derby to Crewe Line Uttoxeter (UTT) is the closest station Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Filming location: Hockley Road, Uttoxeter (ST14 8DF) A level crossing located just outside of the town centre in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, now the sole remaining 'active' level crossing in the town after a major downgrade to a nearby pedestrian crossing. In its current form, it dates back to 1981 and still has semaphore signals reading over it, as well as (at least it appears) no 'auto-raise' function as tellable by the delay in the barriers raising after the trains pass, which is especially noticeable for Derby-bound trains (likely due to 'back-locking' where signals cannot be fully replaced or interlocking released until a certain track circuit has been occupied or treadle struck). It has a loud, unique-sounding combination of alarm sounds, and one of these alarms is original from when the crossing was first commissioned - some 44 years ago! It's an old-looking alarm with a 'squished' looking front and distinctive sound quality, and was amongst the first 'Yodalarm' alarms ever produced for level crossings. Alarms of this kind ('YO3-J') are now incredibly rare, yet this one is still going strong!
