Daniel’s First Kayak Catch: Speed Bream and Dorado Action & Shore-break Disaster!

Two days, two dark launches, and one fish that kept Justin up all night. Day one starts at a secret spot with Faf, a chilled launch in the dark, and a slow morning grinding for bait. One live bait + a frozen bonnie from a previous session go in the water, and then something massive crushes the surface bait and breaks Justin off on the double uni knot. Whatever it was, it never gets named. The rest of the morning produces nothing, and Justin packs up gutted. Day two is a 04:00 wet-windscreen drive up to Westbrook to meet Faf and Daniel for a redemption shot. The shorebreak is unforgiving: Faf goes through on his blue kayak first, then Daniel takes the orange ski straight into a set and gets washed back. Everyone eventually punches out, dripping, into a still-dark lineup. The session starts ugly when a shark snaps off another hard-earned live bait, but it turns fast: Daniel hooks and lands a Dorado on a mozzie on the bottom — his first ever fish off the kayak. Five seconds after that, while Justin is still saying "awesome", his own rod buckles over. It's a long, weird fight on the birthday rod Lloyd and Chadd gave him, with the fish refusing to come up and Justin half-convinced it's a Dorado of his own. It isn't. It's a big couta, and after a proper drawn-out scrap on the green kayak it finally rolls up next to him for a hero pose he'd been chasing since the lost fish the day before. Dismal day one, redemption day two.
