JAXARTES — Tomyris Vol. X, Track 07 Dynasty Fallen · The river he crossed to invade is the line he does not recross. — This is the album's structural peak. After Cyrus took her son Spargapises by a baited camp of wine and lost the boy to death in captivity, Tomyris gathered her full strength and met the Persian army in the open. Herodotus calls it the fiercest battle ever fought between non-Greeks (1.214): the two sides first fought at distance with bows, then closed with spear and short steppe sword until the Massagetae prevailed and the greater part of the Persian army was destroyed on the field. Cyrus himself fell — the rare conqueror who dies invading rather than at home. The track carries the queen inside the charge, not on the hill. One continuous vocal arc rides a 6/8 cavalry gallop as the Massagetae crash off the bank "like the year's first flood" and the empire's tight line holds for the length of a breath, then breaks the way the spring breaks ice. The river is named only in the title and never sung, so the hook stays on the water and the river-stones. Then the cold turn. In a near-spoken Act III the queen walks the Persian dead, turns the faces up one by one, and finds the body with no crown and no guard — "the king the world said could not be killed." Vengeance fulfilled feels like accounting, not triumph. She kneels, fills the skin, and gives it a single word left over for him. Cyrus's death in battle against Tomyris at the Jaxartes is the dominant ancient account, but Herodotus himself notes that many stories were told of Cyrus's death and that he reports the one he found most credible (1.214) — no contemporary record confirms it.
